5 Steps to Your Passport
Earlier this week, I was talking to a friend and learned they do not yet have their passports. Then, I started thinking about how daunting it can feel to get one for the first time. Learning to navigate any federal system is a feat, and gathering all the documents can seem like twice the work.
Learning all the information you need to obtain before you even step foot into getting a passport can feel like just as much work as getting the passport. Obtaining your passport for the first time as an adult can seem daunting, but it can be a smooth process with some preparation. Here are the steps you'll need to follow:
Gather Required Documents: You must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a birth or naturalization certificate. You'll also need a valid form of photo identification, such as a driver's license or government ID. Additionally, you'll need a passport photo, which must meet specific requirements.
Order your Birth Certificate: If you don't have a certified copy of your birth certificate (because how many of us do?), you can order one from the vital records office in the state or county where you were born. Each state has its process for ordering birth certificates, so check the requirements for the state where you were born.
Order your Certificate of Citizenship: If you acquired citizenship through your parents but were not issued a CRBA or Certification of Birth, you can request a Certificate of Citizenship from USCIS. You'll need to fill out Form N-600, Application for Certificate of Citizenship, and submit it along with the required fee and supporting documents.
Complete Form DS-11: This is the application for a U.S. passport. It can be filled out online or in person at an acceptance facility. The online application can be done through the attached link.
Submit Your Application: Bring your completed Form DS-11, proof of citizenship, photo ID, and passport photo to an acceptance facility, such as a post office or county clerk's office. You'll also need to pay the applicable fees.

Provide a Social Security Number: You must provide your Social Security number on the application form. If you don't have one, you must submit a statement explaining why.
Wait for Processing: Once you've submitted your application, you'll need to wait for it to be processed. This can take several weeks, so applying well before your planned travel date is essential.
As of December 2023, Routine is 6-8 weeks, and Expedited is 2-3 weeks. If you need an urgent passport for travel within 14 business days, you can make an appointment at your closest facility.
Obtaining your passport for the first time can take time and effort, but once you have it, you'll be ready to embark on international adventures.
